The Magic of Negative Emotions

During times of uncertainty, a flood of uncomfortable emotions can flow through.

While it may be tempting to make them go away, and while I’m a fan of things like meditation, exercise, and gratitude to support wellbeing (yes, do these!)…if we gloss over the chance to uncover what’s truly happening, a powerful opportunity is lost.  

I believe emotions are messengers for our values within, and are voices of our greatest hopes and dreams. 

They tell us when what’s happening is out of alignment with what we value, and they deliver inspiration and insights from underneath the discomfort and pain. 

So…while negative emotions may not feel good, this doesn’t make them bad, and how we use them is the key. 

 
Negative emotions do not equal bad emotions.
 

And, by the way, when I say “negative” emotions, I mean things like… 

Anger

Worry

Disappointment

Sadness

Fear 

So, if you’re looking for a way to actively work with your emotions today, here are 3 simple steps to help you uncover the magic within. 

 

1.  Emotion Inventory 

Make a list of the emotions you’re experiencing. 

 

2. Exploration 

One by one, go through each emotion listed, and explore with some or all of the following questions to uncover the values, hopes, and dreams within.

 

- What do I need or want right now?

- What do I need or want moving forward?

- What do I value that isn’t happening?

- Where are others acting out of alignment with my values?

- Where am I acting out of alignment with my values?

 

3. Aligned Action 

Take action that supports what you uncovered, one small step, or giant leap at a time.  The following questions can help you uncover the action that's right for you.

 

- What actions can I take to create the life I truly want?

- What actions can I take to create the world I want to live in?

- What’s my next step? 

 

Emotions are fuel that can lift us into greater possibilities, and propel us to create the lives and world we truly want to live in…and it’s amazing what even a few moments of reflection can do.
